No human endeavour can be more exciting than one which can simultaneously address the three major crisis facing mankind today: food, energy and the environment. Our mission is to try to alleviate these by applying the phenomenon of photosynthesis, it being a biological process that is essential for life on Earth and one which has been taking place for thousands of millions of years in chlorophyll microorganisms. Since photosynthesis, driven by light energy, transforms inorganic compounds into organic matter, our task is to obtain from this biomass, products of interest to socio-economic sectors, such as new biofuels which will be able to improve our daily lives. We would very much like to presume that such new products will one day be able to change the unsustainable pattern of development which global society has chosen to adopt, in particular since the nineteenth century Industrial Revolution.

It is not surprising, therefore, that the stimulating scientific and technological challenges which we at ALGAENERGY pursue, have been met with well-deserved recognition and widespread support, not just from the scientific community, but also from European, national and regional authorities. We also enjoy the outstanding contribution made by major international industrial players, particularly that of our shareholders and technology partners, IBERDROLA and REPSOL and our associates, IBERIA and AENA, all of whom are similarly committed to improving life and progress on our planet.

Finally, I would like to point out that the scientific rigour with which we undertake our business is perhaps the one factor which has positioned ALGAENERGY internationally in a league of its own within these emerging socio-economic sectors. The finest example of this professionalism is embodied in ALGAENERGY's own people and complemented by the intellectually enriching ongoing contribution made by the university scientists working with us on our R&D programmes. Both of these form the engine of change which we at ALGAENERGY seek, as they offer an endless source of imagination (something so valuable for all creative activity, particularly when it is transcendental) and in addition they stand as the greatest testimony to the tremendous talent existing in Spain within this field of science and knowledge.
